Neurodiversity-Affirming Statement:
I approach neurodivergence as a strength and as a positive. Finding ourselves, accepting ourselves, and living out ourselves, is essential to self-fulfillment.
Experience:
I have been a High School Counsellor for the past 10 years, but a teacher for almost 20 years. I am a father of 3 boys (16, 13, 10), and my youngest is neurodivergent, which presents many gifts and challenges. I have a tremendous amount of experience working with teens facing challenges with: anxiety, ADHD, depression, family life, relationships, friendships, and all things school-related. In conjunction with working with students, I have worked alongside parents to help them better support their child. Furthermore, sport has played a massive role in my overall development as a person and as a professional. I was and am curious about the mental performance side of sport and the role it plays for each individual. Sport and exercise are undeniably interconnected with mental health; it is something I strive for everyday! I have been fortunate to have coached a variety of sports for 25 years (soccer, baseball, and rugby), of which has benefitted me immensely in Counselling. Empathy, problem-solving skills, and humility are all characteristics that I honed and sharpened through playing sports and strive to honour and grow each day.
Approach & Modalities:
I work from a strength-based approach, appreciating and celebrating individuality, with the goal of empowering each person to find their way through their challenge; ultimately, I want to meet people where they are at in their journey. Helping people discover their courage is foundational to how I approach my work. I primarily operate through a Solution Focussed lens, to co-create strategies that are both fair and achievable, and then following up on the follow through, to see what direction to go next, together. I also use CBT to identify challenges and which techniques would be a best fit to move forward. Finally, Narrative Therapy can be powerful in the re-storying/reframing of specific patterns or behaviours which are negatively impacting the day-to-day; story matters.
Communication Style:
I enjoy building rapport and getting to know individuals. I am transparent and open about who I am. I have a light, sometimes dry sense of humour, but will always be validating. At the same time, I can be direct.
Fun Facts or Interests:
I am a vegetable gardner and fruit grower. I have 2 dogs (Maverick and Bandit) whom I love to bits. When inspired, I love to write poetry. And when the weather permits, I love hiking and backcountry camping with family and friends. As always, exercise is ever-present in my day-to-day life!
